In Memoriam: Frederick “Fred” Quellmalz

Professional Photographers of America is saddened to learn of the passing of Frederick “Fred” Quellmalz, age 93, of Des Plaines, Illinois. His long service to the profession at large and to Professional Photographers of America was significant and has had a lasting impact.

Perhaps his most public role came as editor and publisher of Professional Photographer magazine from 1953 to 1974. Prior to coming to Professional Photographers of America, Quellmalz had a rich and varied resume. He graduated from Princeton University with honors in 1934 and in 1940 he worked as the director of photographic activities for the 1940 World’s Fair in New York. Quellmalz went on to serve as the Director, Secretary and Executive Director of the Photographic Society of America for four years and edited that organization’s publication for a total of 13 years.

Hasselblad is creating a new standard of digital image quality for professional photographers with the announcement of a new camera and three camera backs based on the combination of Hasselblad’s new, true 39 megapixel CCD sensor and its unique Digital APO Correction (DAC) technology. This new line of products features the new Hasselblad Natural Color Solution, which takes digital photographic color reproduction to an entirely new level. The new products also deliver images of unsurpassed sharpness and resolution and at the same time reduce any moiré effect to a minimum – a first in the history of digital photography.

NikonNet and 'Legends Behind the Lens' Pay Tribute to Joel Sartore

In order to make a change, one must shed light on the issue at hand. This is the method used by Joel Sartore in his environmental photography. His work has been an influential force in creating awareness about the environment and the importance of protecting our natural surroundings. In celebration of his unique approach and remarkable dedication, NikonNet will honor Joel Sartore for the month of January in its inspiring monthly showcase, "Legends Behind the Lens."

For over 15 years, Sartore has photographed wildlife and the environment for National Geographic and other publications. Convincing people that there is a tangible, measurable and practical benefit to preserving the land and its inhabitants is, Sartore believes, the key to saving the wild places and the species that live there. Sartore realizes that a hopeful message is vital.

Windows Metafile (WMF) Vulnerability

Computer World has post a WMF Faq with information on how to protect your windows computers from this vunerability until Microsoft releases a patch for it on January 10th. The FAQ notes that there are over 200 attack methods already taking advantage of this hole to run malicious code on a target machine -- infecting it with spyware, stealing data or recruiting it into a zombie network.

 

World’s Largest Annual Photography Exhibition Comes to Austin, Texas

AUSTIN, TEXAS—The world’s largest and longest-running annual photography exhibition will make a stop in Austin, Texas, this January. Hosted by the Professional Photographers of America (PPA), the 2006 International Print Exhibition will be displayed in conjunction with the Imaging USA convention and trade show at the Austin Convention Center, January 22-24, 2006. The International Print Exhibition is open to the public and free of charge.

Representing the diverse elements of professional photography and digital imaging, this year’s exhibition will feature more than 2,500 images from the PPA General and Loan Collections. These select images were chosen from more than 6,000 entries to PPA’s annual Print Exhibition Competition, which draws some of the world’s most prominent image makers. Images for the General and ultra-exclusive Loan collections were chosen by a panel of more than 40 eminent photographers from across the United States. PPA members receive one merit certificate for each entry into the General Collection and two merits for each entry into the Loan Collection. These merits can be applied toward degrees granted by the association.

This year’s International Print Exhibition will include special collections of works from PPA’s Imaging Excellence Award winners, as well as the Photographer of the Year Award recipients. Imaging Excellence Award winners are those PPA members who have achieved the Master of Photography status, yet continue to earn competition merits through new and innovative imagery. Photographers of the Year include Print Exhibition contestants who have received multiple General and/or Loan Collection designations.
