Professional Photographers of America is saddened to learn of the passing of Frederick “Fred” Quellmalz, age 93, of Des Plaines, Illinois. His long service to the profession at large and to Professional Photographers of America was significant and has had a lasting impact.
Perhaps his most public role came as editor and publisher of Professional Photographer magazine from 1953 to 1974. Prior to coming to Professional Photographers of America, Quellmalz had a rich and varied resume. He graduated from Princeton University with honors in 1934 and in 1940 he worked as the director of photographic activities for the 1940 World’s Fair in New York. Quellmalz went on to serve as the Director, Secretary and Executive Director of the Photographic Society of America for four years and edited that organization’s publication for a total of 13 years.
